The fashion model, actress-turned-filmmaker premiered her short film, titled “HANA” at the 9th annual La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival (LJIFFF) in July 2018 at various venues in La Jolla,California. The fashion film received three International Fashion Film Nominations – that is, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Music. The LJIFFF is considered the Cannes of the fashion film world and the largest gathering of fashion filmmakers.
Directed by Luey Nohut, “HANA” is inspired by a simple quote from former longtime creative director Alber Elbaz of fashion house Lanvin: “Style is something reflected from our soul to the outside world – an emotion.” With a little help from friends, Noka wanted to create a beautiful love letter to the fashion world on film, an industry that has been a pathway to her successful career as a model, social media influencer and tastemaker. Along with her husband, Shkumbin, she served as executive producer on the short film.
Born in Istanbul, Turkey as the only child to Albanian parents, Noka grew up in various countries before settling in Kosovo. Like a military brat, she moved around from country to country due to her mother’s work as an international diplomat, while her father ran a successful business before succumbing to cancer.
“She Ought to be in Pictures”
At the tender age of 7, Noka booked her first commercial and began her modeling career for Pars McCann Erickson in Istanbul, Turkey, and soon she was booking modeling jobs and walking runways all over Europe. Her face has graced the covers of numerous international magazines, opening up the doors to acting gigs and hosting engagements in Croatia, Turkey, Kosovo, Ireland, Great Britain and the United States. In the States, she has walked the runways of LA Fashion Week as well as modeled and worked on numerous campaigns for various brands.
Growing up, Noka’s parents also kept her busy with other extracurricular activities – namely, tennis, beginning at the age of 4. A junior tennis champion, Noka was recruited by scouts, and seriously considered a career as a professional athlete. However, the death of her father at the age of 15 made her lose enthusiasm in the game. Much like the powerhouse Williams sisters, Noka’s father served as a coach, mentor and inspiration for playing the game. (By the way, she has a mean backhand stroke to this day!) Without his presence, she admits that she lost that competitive edge.
Hana always took her education seriously. She graduated from Griffith College Dublin, in Ireland with a BA (Honors) Degree in Journalism and Visual Media.
Upon graduation, she returned to Kosovo, and put her entrepreneurial pursuits to work in the tech industry. Along with a family member, she launched a job search engine, called, www.kosovajob.com,which is similar to Monster.com. The employment website proved to be so successful, it spawned a reality show on national television in Kosovo, called “We Have a Job for You!” (which is translated in English.) Noka wore many hats, serving as the executive producer of the show, from recruiting talent to crafting story lines to handling the production issues of the show. The show ran for two seasons, but it opened doors for other opportunities in the entertainment business.
She also nabbed a gig as host of a popular tv show, called “TEEN", which aired on Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK), which operates five channels and two radio stations, consisting of diverse programming in news and entertainment. Her appearance on that show spawned a plethora of other guest appearances on other Kosovo tv shows.
After a taste of showbiz in Kosovo and inspired by American influences in music, television and film, Noka decided to pursue acting full time. She first took a bite out of the Big Apple in New York City before eventually landing in Los Angeles.
Living the American Dream
A rising ingénue, Noka just landed a role in“General,” directed by Antun Vrdoljak, and starring Goran Visnjic and Armand Assante, which follows the life of Croatian war hero General Ante Gotovina. She is also the Ambassador of Brand Embassy in Austria.
The United States is forever tied to Noka’s home of Kosovo, thanks to the Clinton Administration’s intervention in Kosovo War along with NATO-led military force and air bombings. Noka remembers the civil unrest, which left her country war-torn and ravaged. As a result, she founded “Kosova’s Philanthropists,” a non-profit organization to provide real, sustainable help to orphans and children with special needs. She hopes to make a difference in the world by improving the lives of children.
Pursuing the American dream, Noka currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband.
